Roger Q. Mason, dramaturg, and director of the “Festival of New American Plays” at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, believes that this event is changing the canon of American theater.
This year, the festival will feature three full-length plays and six 10-minute readings, created by playwrights from across the United States. Mason hopes that showcasing new and diverse voices will challenge the traditional narratives that dominate American theater.
“So much of what is considered the ‘canon’ of American theater is really just a small fraction of the stories out there,” Mason said. “By highlighting these new works, we are expanding the boundaries of what American theater can be.”
The festival will take place from July 19 to July 21 and will also include discussions and workshops with the playwrights. Mason believes that events like this are crucial for nurturing emerging talent and pushing the industry to be more inclusive and representative of the diverse society in which we live.
“We need to make sure that all voices are heard and that all stories are being told,” Mason said. “That is how we will truly change the landscape of American theater.”
The festival promises to be an exciting and groundbreaking event for lovers of theater and those looking to explore new and innovative works.
